Lumpy and the Dumpers
“Gnats in the Pissa”

Lumpy and the DumpersI imagine Belleville, Illinois is a shithole. It’s probably the type of place where dreams go to die and scatological cretins like Lumpy and the Dumpers thrive in the shadow of that community’s de-evolution. As far as scouring the earth for the fetid bottom crust of punk, Total Punk has another winner on their hands in this gnarly little single. “Gnats in the Pissa” is completely inept in the absolute best sense. Drums sounds like deluged cardboard boxes and rusted industrial detritus. Picks are replaced with sandpaper. The vocals are a conscious ode to GG Allin, post-Jabbers, when the guy was flinging blood, cum, and feces and flirting with a dishonorable death. Envision homemade tattoos, antifreeze hooch, and a gaggle of herpes-infested lot lizards hanging out and giving blowjobs just because the Dumpers are a “band.” This is not the kind of stuff that will ever grow and/or include discernible lyrics that do more than simply gross-out. It’s beyond raw—more like rotting. We could portend that the Dumpers are looking to deconstruct punk into even more blunt chunks than we’ve heard before, but that would be giving them too much credit.

The flipside, “Ghoul Breath,” shows the Dumpers just as content without a competent beat. Instead, they wallow in a squall of feedback and distortion. It’s forgettable—like backmasking a Dwarves record—but only because “Gnats” does such a lurid job of scaring us into reality. It’s a scary reality that bands like this still exist. It’s a lost art to be this dumb and convincing. But in the end, the world needs GG Allin. It needs The Mummies and The Meatmen. It needs Lumpy and the Dumpers.
