Nada Surf
You Know Who You Are

Nada Surf, You Know Who You AreGood ol’ reliable Nada Surf. It’s not quite accurate to say that they’ve been making the same album over and over, but it’s certainly fair to note their well-established style. While there’s always a question of how much distortion there will be, you can count on finely wrought melodies, light-as-air harmonies, and more jangling guitars per square inch than the Gin Blossoms’ tour bus.

On You Know Who You Are (Barsuk Records), now full-time member Doug Gillard (most famously of Guided By Voices previously) brings extra crunch to hard-driving tracks like “New Bird” and “You Know Who You Are.” Dan Wilson (not only of Semisonic, but also a two-time Grammy winner for his work with Adele and the Dixie Chicks) co-wrote two songs on this album, which means there are two times when Nada Surf sounds like Semisonic, and those songs (“Rushing” and “Victory’s Yours”) aren’t too difficult to pick out. “Rushing” is particularly good, a song about young lovers (or maybe not) that carries the weight which comes with age.

Other than those small upgrades, though, it’s business as usual. A couple of these songs (“Animal,” “Friend Hospital”) are a little too sleepy to be memorable, but Matthew Caws’ voice remains a constant pleasure. There’s no single track as exciting as the best bits of albums like Lucky or Let Go, but more often than not Nada Surf’s whimsy and energetic attention to detail carry the day.
