They move from one band to the next, frequently burning bridges behind them. For David Lowery, however, this hasn\u2019t been the case. With the two bands that, aside from one solo record and an album made with German Polka outfit FSK, represent his life\u2019s work frequently touring together, things have come full-circle for the Camper Van Beethoven\/Cracker frontman. As such, when he isn\u2019t fighting for songwriters\u2019 rights or lecturing at the University of Georgia, Lowery is able to perform songs from the entirety of his recorded output with nearly all musicians who helped him create them.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Camper Van Beethoven has emerged recently as the more active of Lowery\u2019s musical concerns, the band is perhaps still regarded as the quirky cult predecessor to the more populist Cracker, and as such they took the Highline Ballroom stage first Sunday night. They opened with \u201cTania\u201d from <i>Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart<\/i>, the band\u2019s major label debut from 1988, and the gypsy-tinged strains of Jonathan Segel\u2019s violin were immediately arresting. Cuts from that record dominated the opening portion of Camper\u2019s set, with \u201cShe Divines Water,\u201d \u201cTurquoise Jewelry\u201d and \u201cEye of Fatima (Parts 1 and 2)\u201d all being played before Lowery and company segued into newer material like \u201cToo High for the Love-In\u201d and \u201cNorthern California Girls\u201d from last year\u2019s excellent <i>La Costa Perdida<\/i> and the title track from 2004\u2019s <i>New Roman Times<\/i>. Still, older cuts like \u201cAll Her Favorite Fruit\u201d held the greatest resonance, with lyrics less complicated than those on the newer material, but just as evocative. Of course, there are songs that any CVB set would seem incomplete without (\u201cTake the Skinheads Bowling\u201d and \u201cGood Guys and Bad Guys\u201d), but the band also trotted out \u201cThe Day That Lassie Went to the Moon\u201d and \u201cOpi Rides Again\u2014Club Med Sucks\u201d from 1985\u2019s <i>Telephone Free Landslide Victory<\/i>. Through it all, though, there wasn\u2019t a hint of nostalgia, and the mix of reggae, hardcore, and other far-flung influences in the band\u2019s rich catalog remained vibrant.<\/p>\n<p>Following a solo performance of \u201cO Death\u201d by Lowery on banjo, Cracker guitarist Johnny Hickman joined the singer for a run through \u201cFriends\u201d from the band\u2019s last album, 2009\u2019s <i>Sunrise in the Land of Milk and Honey<\/i>. The set got going when the rest of the band emerged for \u201cUseless Stuff,\u201d and \u201cGimme One More Chance,\u201d with its meaty riffs, was a crowd-pleaser. But it was Cracker\u2019s more nuanced songs, highlighted by Kenny Margolis\u2019 keyboard and accordion playing, that stood out. Sure, \u201cEurotrash Girl\u201d was a fun romp, but it was less balls-out songs like \u201cBeen Around the World\u201d that really shined. \u00a0On the surface, Cracker\u2019s set contrasted fairly sharply with that of CVB, but Lowery\u2019s love for wordplay and broad palette of musical influences were what was most distinct. As they finished up with \u201cI See the Light\u201d before encoring with the Hickman-sung \u201cAnother Song About the Rain,\u201d it seemed obvious that Lowery could continue on in this manner for many years to come without it ever getting old.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For many musicians, the trajectory of their career is a linear one.
