Tiny Changes: A Celebration of The Midnight Organ Fight"},"content":{"rendered":"

\"Tiny<\/a>Longtime Agit readers will know that we fell in love with Frightened Rabbit via the Scottish band\u2019s second album, 2008\u2019s The Midnight Organ Fight<\/i>. Our interview with singer Scott Hutchinson<\/a> was one of our very first features, and so we were more than a little gutted to hear of his death last year. While there had long been a healthy dose of melancholy in his lyrics, his suicide still came as a shock to say the least.<\/p>\n

In celebration of The Midnight Organ Fight\u2019s<\/i> 10th anniversary, the band enlisted a group of friends to reinterpret the album\u2019s 14 songs. The project began before Hutchinson\u2019s passing (he approved all the songs on the record), but of course now it bears much more gravitas. Named Tiny Changes<\/i> (Canvasback Music\/Atlantic Records), the album will benefit an organization of the same name that helps young people dealing with mental health issues.<\/p>\n

I once called TMOF<\/i> \u201ca winning combination of cathartic hootenanny, Updikian tropes, and an Arab Strap\u2013like sense of despondency.\u201d As with much of Frightened Rabbit\u2019s music, for all the despair the album charts, Scott seemed to always see the light at the end of the tunnel, which is perhaps why his suicide was so surprising. On \u201cI Feel Better,\u201d he even sang, \u201cI\u2019ll stow away my greys\u2026 I feel better and better and worse and then better.\u201d As such, it\u2019s hard not to hear TMOF<\/i>\u2014and thus Tiny Changes<\/i>\u2014in relation to the tragedy of Scott\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n

On Tiny Changes<\/i>, \u201cI Feel Better\u201d is tackled by Oxford Collapse<\/a>, who came out of retirement to record the song. That the band regrouped after nearly 10 years apart exemplifies the personal nature of this album; every artist here has some direct connection to the band, and Frightened Rabbit members played on a couple of tracks (Fiskur\u2019s \u201cGood Arms vs Bad Arms\u201d and Piano Bar\u2019s version of \u201cThe Twist\u201d). As a result, it\u2019s a little bit of a disparate collection and the record lacks the cohesiveness of the original album or what may have resulted had it been produced by an entirely Glaswegian line-up. That said, it is also obvious that each song was a labor of love, and the record benefits for it.<\/p>\n

There are fairly straight renditions of TMOF<\/i> highlights like \u201cKeep Yourself Warm\u201d (Death Cab for Cutie\u2019s Ben Gibbard) and \u201cHead Rolls Off\u201d (The Hold Steady\u2019s Craig Finn), but it\u2019s the songs that are more dramatically reworked that stand out. The most leftfield contribution comes from the duo of Kate Harkin and comedian Sarah Silverman who do a charming, electronic-tinged take on \u201cMy Backwards Walk.\u201d Former FR soundman Jeff Zeigler\u2019s reworking of \u201cExtrasupervery\u201d is similarly dissimilar from the original, stretching the once minute-long song to almost three times its length.<\/p>\n

Of course, due to its obvious prescience, the most difficult track to now hear is \u201cFloating in the Forth.\u201d Here, Hutchinson sang, \u201cAnd fully clothed, I float away\u2026 down the Forth, into the sea. I think I\u2019ll save suicide for another day,\u201d seemingly foreshadowing his body being found near the Forth Road Bridge. On Tiny Changes<\/i>, this song and its emotional weight is handled expertly by friends and fellow Scotsmen The Twilight Sad<\/a>, who turn it into a blustery mix of frayed guitars and layered vocals. Unsurprisingly, it\u2019s one of the record\u2019s most poignant and powerful moments and will leave you with a lump in your throat, if not a tear in your eye.<\/p>\n

Apparently, the band had more willing contributors than the album has songs as there are additional takes on \u201cThe Modern Leper,\u201d \u201cThe Twist\u201d and \u201cMy Backwards Walk\u201d tacked on the end, and like the rest of the record, they are rendered with obvious care. One can\u2019t help but wish that Scott was still around to create more music, but Tiny Changes<\/i> is a fitting tribute to the legacy he left behind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
