OMD). Successful not because they\u2019ve enjoyed the popularity they experienced 30 years ago when \u201cIf You Leave,\u201d their contribution to the soundtrack of John Hughes\u2019 <i>Pretty in Pink<\/i> movie, was a Top 10 hit, but because the new albums they\u2019ve released have been every bit as engaging as the records they first made as electronic music vanguards in the late \u201970s and early \u201880s. Both 2010\u2019s <i>History of Modern<\/i> and 2013\u2019s <i>English Electric<\/i> exhibited a sort of retro-futurism that was evocative of the band\u2019s beginnings while still being forward-thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Combining a palette of electronic sounds with inherent pop instincts, the group\u2019s latest, <i>The Punishment of Luxury<\/i> (White Noise Records), shares the aesthetic of its predecessors. The duo\u2014bassist Andy McCluskey and keyboardist Paul Humphreys\u2014possesses the unwavering ability to imbue shiny synth tones and mechanized beats with a certain humanity. Indeed, only OMD could make the immunoglobulin gene family sound romantic (\u201cIsotype\u201d). As in the past, the band\u2019s best work is marked by the juxtaposition of man and machine. On \u201cWhat Have We Done,\u201d Humphreys laments unfulfilled dreams atop a mechanized backing. With even his voice at times being processed, that man\/machine line is intermittently blurred, which seems to be OMD\u2019s intent; \u201cLa Mitrailleuse\u201d opens with the repeated command of \u201cbend your body to the will of the machine.\u201d We may not know if androids dream of electric sheep, but if there\u2019s a soundtrack to their slumber, it surely sounds like this.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of all the many reunions in recent years, perhaps the most pleasantly successful has been that of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (a.k.a.
