So it\u2019s refreshing when everything comes together. About two years ago, 17-year-old singer-songwriter\/producer Holly Lapsley Fletcher, who performs under her middle name L\u00e5psley, came to attention with a well-trafficked Soundcloud page and her debut EP, <i>Monday<\/i>. The buzz led to her signing with eclectic British label XL Recordings and a follow-up EP, <i>Understudy<\/i>, the following year. Now 19, L\u00e5psley has released her full-length debut, <i>Long Way Home<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00e5psley produced <i>Long Way Home<\/i> with some help from Paul O\u2019Duffy, who co-wrote Amy Winehouse\u2019s \u201cWake Up Alone\u201d and manned the boards for a grocery list of artists. You get the sense that the partnership was more for the sake of collaboration than needing someone in the studio to steer the ship. Much like the debut by labelmate Adele, who also broke through at a young age, the album is remarkably confidant and assured. And mixing electronic production with acoustic instrumentation\u2014chiefly piano\u2014the record plays like a mashup of James Blake, Adele, and The XX.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00e5psley\u2019s hushed production style stems from her early days of constructing songs in GarageBand, working through headphones as to not wake anyone up. There\u2019s an overall sense of quiet melancholy that flows through the album as it details the disintegration of a relationship. Yet L\u00e5psley doesn\u2019t wallow and generously throws in tough beats to balance the mood out. She also has some R&amp;B-flavored excursions and an unapologetic disco moment in \u201cOperator (He Doesn\u2019t Call Me).\u201d Her ear for production is near flawless, with one of best moments being her duet with her own pitched-down vocals (\u201cStations\u201d). It\u2019s a simple yet smart effect that\u2019s so well done you\u2019d think it was an actual duet if you don\u2019t know the backstory.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of songs that seem to stray away from the path, but with repeated listens they fall into context and help punctuate the overall narrative. After all, it\u2019s unlikely that L\u00e5psley would do something for no particular reason. It\u2019s amazing to think that if L\u00e5psley is achieving this now, what will she do when she has more experience under her belt? <i>Long Way Home<\/i> has a warm heart despite its seemingly icy exterior, a human soul among all the machines, and is unquestionably a landmark debut.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The internet is long on hype and hit or miss when it comes to delivery.
