With albums like Destroyer\u2019s <i>Kaputt<\/i>, M83\u2019s <i>Midnight City<\/i>, and even Tame Impala\u2019s <i>Currents<\/i> getting into the limelight, the real challenge of using dreamy textures in 2016 is finding a way to continually stand out. So it\u2019s somewhat expected (even if it\u2019s still a bummer) that Jack Tatum, the sole proprietor of Wild Nothing, has hit a speed bump on his third LP, <i>Life of Pause<\/i> (Captured Tracks). A lot has happened since we last heard from Tatum on his second album, <i>Nocturne<\/i> (2012), and now there\u2019s a lot of fresh-faced titans working within the same style.<\/p>\n<p>Tatum doesn\u2019t really help himself, though. In terms of the lack of individuality, you could speculate <i>Life of Pause<\/i> is a result of the current music climate, although Tatum\u2019s project is sure to be overshadowed by the Beach Houses and Twin Shadows of the world. Nonetheless, a lot of what has tied his previous work together is no longer here. One conspicuous difference is the absence of guitar work on <i>Life of Pause<\/i>; aside from \u201cJapanese Alice,\u201d it is a mere freckle on the record. It\u2019s surprising given that his defining songs\u2014<i>Nocturne\u2019s<\/i> \u201cOnly Heather\u201d and <i>Gemini\u2019s<\/i> \u201cChinatown\u201d and \u201cSummer Holiday,\u201d for instance\u2014were anchored by guitar under all the spacey layers.<\/p>\n<p>All this isn\u2019t to say <i>Life of Pause<\/i> isn\u2019t without its moments. It\u2019s a pure Wild Nothing release\u2014distant and muted\u2014and has instances of greatness in its ennui, namely on \u201cAlien\u201d and \u201cLady Blue.\u201d However, Tatum unfortunately disregards most of what made everything else by the band so appealing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dream-pop is increasingly becoming a tough game.
