While the latter still gets some work on <i>Currents<\/i>, Tame Impala fast-forwards about 10 years stylistically to the disco\/soft-rock era. (The mere existence of a song like \u201cLet it Happen,\u201d a near eight-minute-long dance epic, shows how fully realized this album is.) Even though frontman Kevin Parker has a tendency to nitpick his own work, Tame Impala\u2019s latest reveals how limitless the possibilities really are for this band.<\/p>\n<p>Classifying <i>Currents<\/i> as some retro \u201970s album does it a disservice; if it weren\u2019t for how much of an epic jam this album is, it could be a companion to Destroyer\u2019s <i>Kaputt<\/i>. The album\u2019s most consistent quality may be its throwback atmosphere, but Parker dabbles with a variety of styles within it, most notably chillwave (\u201cEventually\u201d), funk (\u201cThe Less I Know The Better\u201d), and late-70s balladry (\u201c\u2019Cause I\u2019m A Man\u201d). Then there\u2019s lead single \u201cLet It Happen,\u201d a song that\u2019s almost as intoxicating as New Order\u2019s \u201cBlue Monday.\u201d It helps that Parker is a skilled bassist, as he\u2019s often the force that drives these songs, slicing through the otherwise largely somnambulant vibe.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being more soulful and diverse, Tame Impala\u2019s newest also comes off as Parker\u2019s most remorseful. As lines like \u201cI know that I\u2019ll be happier, and I know that you will too,\u201d (from \u201cEventually\u201d) indicate, several cuts fall into the category of bitter, breakup songs. And though the others are outright dance tracks, these two camps aren\u2019t mutually exclusive on <i>Currents<\/i>.
