They were a New Jersey rock band with a tasteful Bruce Springsteen inflection, yielding heartbreak anthems with punk\u2019s velocity. This was encapsulated best mid-career, with SideOneDummy breakout, The <i>\u201959 Sound<\/i>, and on the E-Street-straying follow-up, <i>American Slang<\/i>. The records were instantly familiar and so overtly emotional that shouting along with them made one feel you were actually coping.<\/p>\n<p>But fast forward to the present day. In frontman Brian Fallon\u2019s words, <i>Get Hurt<\/i> (Island Records), the band\u2019s latest, was intended to be \u201ccompletely different than anything (The Gaslight Anthem) had ever done before.\u201d As he further explained to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/pictures\/gaslight-anthem-head-to-nashville-for-completely-different-lp-20140523\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Rolling Stone<\/i><\/a>, he chugged a lot of Bob Dylan and did some research on \u201cany band that had changed\u201d (like The Beatles and Pink Floyd, among others), immediately equating The Gaslight Anthem to artists of deep, historical importance. All of Fallon\u2019s preliminary work, however, ultimately led to a project that fed off all of the wrong influences. <i>Get Hurt<\/i> is recommended listening only as background noise, a fitting soundtrack to a sitcom with a saloon backdrop.<\/p>\n<p>Though Fallon and Springsteen were once inextricable at the mention of the former, the Boss\u2019 influence is rarely heard on <i>Get Hurt<\/i>. Album opener \u201cStay Vicious\u201d is a sludgy piece, evocative of Black Sabbath at best. \u201c1,000 Years\u201d shifts a couple decades\u2014and a couple phases of rock later\u2014into a cock-rock anthem. The hard rock of the \u201980s seems to be the band\u2019s new muse, as revealed in would-be Bon Jovi gem \u201cHelter Skeleton\u201d and further on \u201cRollin\u2019 and Tumblin\u2019\u201d and \u201cRed Violins.\u201d But when glam metal takes an aside, <i>Get Hurt<\/i> is left without any nuance. \u201cMama\u2019s Boy\u201d tries too hard to be a Dylan ringer, acoustic\/harmonica dichotomy and all. Referring to <i>Get Hurt<\/i> as peripheral music seems apt with \u201cDark Places,\u201d a song that might very well appear at the conclusion of your favorite medical drama.<\/p>\n<p>Fallon says he \u201cwanted to figure out how far you can go without pissing people off,\u201d but this record isn\u2019t going to be burned in masses; it is merely a disappointment. While The Gaslight Anthem used to be an authentic, no-nonsense band, their conviction wavers with <i>Get Hurt<\/i>, and by going to for something different, they\u2019ve made a haphazard mess instead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At one point, The Gaslight Anthem had a propensity for writing heart-wrenching songs that went straight for the jugular.
