It might be fitting, then, in a closing-the-circle kind of way, that <i>Elvis Recorded Live On Stage in Memphis\u2014<\/i>the final live Presley album released during the King\u2019s lifetime\u2014commemorated his first concert in his adopted hometown since 1961. With a nod toward the 40th anniversary of that performance, Legacy has reissued the record in an edition that includes not only the full Memphis concert (the original LP only featured about 40 minutes of the set), but also a full \u201cwarm up\u201d concert performed two days earlier in Richmond, Virginia and a handful of songs taken from live in-studio concert rehearsals recorded later that year.<\/p>\n<p>Each concert begins in epic <i>2001: A Space Odyssey <\/i>fashion with an invocation of \u201cAlso Sprach Zarathustra\u201d and ends with the now-iconic announcement that \u201cElvis has left the building.\u201d\u00a0 Similar setlists were used for each show, and the reissue contains repeated performances of rock standards (including \u201cI Got A Woman, \u201cLong Tall Sally,\u201d \u201cWhole Lotta Shakin\u2019 Goin\u2019 On\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Be Cruel\u201d), gospel songs (such as \u201cWhy Me Lord\u201d) and iconic Elvis numbers (like \u201cSuspicious Minds,\u201d \u201cCan\u2019t Help Falling In Love\u201d and \u201cAn American Trilogy\u201d). This repetition isn\u2019t anything to quibble over, however, because both Elvis and his backing ensemble delivered spirited performances throughout both concerts. Ever the consummate showman, Elvis\u2019 stage banter is often worth the price of admission here, and he doesn\u2019t skimp in the vocal department. There\u2019s an energy to Presley\u2019s delivery that often propels these songs to transcendent heights.<\/p>\n<p>Tacked on to the end of the second disc of the set, the in-studio rehearsals present an insider glimpse of Elvis and his band workshopping material. There\u2019s a lighthearted air to these performances (before the run through of \u201cDown In The Alley,\u201d Presley asks, \u201cWell, what can we screw up next?\u201d), and it\u2019s fascinating to compare the onstage King to the off-stage Elvis. Coupled with the Richmond performance, these tracks make this reissue of <i>Elvis Recorded Live On Stage in Memphis <\/i>something worth revisiting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By 1974, Elvis Presley had essentially reached the last stage of his iconic performing career.
