Tent Time
Ron Wadlinger

image1319653406.jpgI’ve been hanging out at the Brooklyn Vegan/M for Montreal day show’s outdoor tent for a while now. I first saw French Canadian metal icons Voivod, who soldiered through a number of technical difficulties. They play a fairly straightforward style of metal, but I really dug their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Astronomy Domine.” You’ve got to respect a metal band that appreciates Syd Barrett-era Floyd.

After that was an odd solo set by Andrew WK. Mostly improvising on the piano, he alternated between classical pieces and semi-nonsense Springsteen-style anthems about small dogs and geese. He’s quite the talented pianist, but I’m not sure what else I took away from the set. I figure I’ll stick around for Roky Erickson with Okkervil River.

Back In Hell
Ron Wadlinger

image1215718918.jpgTy Segall literally just destroyed at Beerland. He and his band ripped through a set of scratchy, but melodic, punk that got spastic at all the right moments.

Frustrated by a malfunctioning guitar, Segall smashed it apart on the stage at set’s end. The songs were great, but I admit it was also cool to see a little gear mutilation as well. Either way, count Segall as one of the top acts in the Goner stable.

Austin Freezes Over

Once More Into The Chill
Ron Wadlinger

image1138305876.jpgAfter last night’s rain, temperatures have sunken to the 40s in Austin. It’s fitting, then, that I’m starting the day off with Memory Tapes, one of the emerging chillwave artists.

The band line-up here is a simple two-piece guitar/vocals, drums/backing-track technician combo, but the sound is a full electronic (sometimes soulful) pop that I find myself preferring over fellow chill-wavers like Neon Indian, who I caught Wednesday. This might be the best group of the subgenre—well worth checking out.
